I’m going to share a very simple and easy to make halwa recipe. Yes, it is made using custard powder. And no, it doesn’t taste weird. In fact, it tastes almost like wheat halwa that it is almost impossible for one to find out it is made from custard powder, unless told. Like any other halwa, it requires time and patience.Try this halwa for a change this diwlai and surprise your loved ones.

Required Ingredients:

  • Custard powder- 1/2 cup (100ml)
  • Sugar- 1 1/2 cup
  • Water- 2 cups
  • Cardamom powder/pineapple essence- 1 tsp
  • Ghee- 3 tbsp
  • Cashew nuts-10 to 15

Method:

In a non-stick kadai/wok, add custard powder, sugar and water and mix until the sugar dissolves completely.

Heat the mixture on low flame continuously stirring.

After about 7 minutes, it will start to thicken and will turn glossy.

Add cardamom powder/pineapple essence and 2 tbsp of ghee and saute.

Keep stirring on low flame. You will notice that it changes colour from dark brown to orange after sometime.

Once it gets into a halwa consistency, i.e it will start leaving the sides and form a jelly like mass, turn off the flame.

Grease a tray/cake tin with little ghee and pour the halwa into it. Let it cool for an hour.

Once warm, invert it and cut into small squares using a knife.

Garnish with cashews and serve.

Notes:

  • You can fry cashew nuts and almonds in ghee and add it to the halwa before taking it off the stove.
  • You can serve without cutting into squares. Just take it off the stove when it starts leaving the sides and serve.
